Dear Class,
We are engaged in different conversations everyday and use ever more sophisticated ways to communicate with our friends, family and colleagues. Knowing what to say and when is not a trivial task. The more opportunity to communicate, the more we need to know how to effectively express ourselves and handle all sorts of communication challenges.

For example, it is not always easy to "SAY NO", but then if you know how to say it correctly it may not be that difficult. In fact it might be quite satisfying and rewarding.

Consider the given scenario :-
You have made plans to attend your best friend’s wedding party. Your boss/head/reporting manager asks you to stay over time and finish a job. You usually accept these last minute requests as you have a sense of belonging to you workshop and want to be in good terms with your boss/head/reporting manager, but today..............you really have to go.

How would you respond to your boss/head/reporting manager?
How will you formulate your sentence.

Share your answer and comment your understanding of it.
{Ideally, you should respond assertively with confidence, calm and with adequate reasoning.}
(keep it short)

  1. My response would be
    'Boss, I hear you and understand the urgency of the situation but I really need to attend this function. Don't worry Boss, the work will be done as I have arranged for someone else to complete this work for you and before it is sent to you I will cross check the work once it's done.

  5. Sir, I understand the urgency of work but today it will not be possible for me to work late as I have to attend this function. But you need not worry as I have requested XYZ to work and share with me. I will keep a track of the progress of the work and will keep you informed about it. Tomorrow first thing in the morning you will have it done.

  6. Respected Sir/Maam
    I have received your request regarding the work to be completed, however I have some personal commitments that I need to cater to maintain social amenities and which cannot be delayed. I understand the importance of the nature of the work and have screened my way through it. However ot is not possible for me to attend to it at this very moment, I will make sure that the work is submitted to you at the earliest.
    Inconvenience is highly regretted

  7. I will start by letting the boss know that I understand his request and that the work must be really important or else he wouldn't have asked me to stay over time and finish the job,but my plan to attend the wedding was scheduled early, if this wasn't the case then I would have happily completed the work like earlier. I will request him to give this work to any of my other colleagues,and I will do so very politely and humbly.
